QuickResize

QuickResize Pro

Resize all or part of an entire InDesign document, or all documents in an InDesign book, to any dimension!

QuickResize Pro provides a simple, convenient way to resize an entire document, part of a document, or even all documents in an InDesign book, to whatever new size you like.

Unlike the random weirdness that seems to happen when using InDesign’s built-in liquid layouts, QuickResize Pro gives predictable, pixel-perfect results! In fact, if you are resizing proportionally, you can expect the document to look identical (and fully editable, of course) after resizing.

Here are a couple of testimonials, including what Scott Citron, award-winning graphic designer, Adobe Press author, and Head of the New York InDesign Users Group has to say about QuickResize Pro:

  • I am pretty upset – that I did not find out about the amazing QuickResize script until yesterday! I cannot believe I did not know about this incredible utility! With a deadline looming ahead, the production facility said, “We need you to enlarge this document.” I thought, “Are you kidding me? Not on this document, not now!” Based on my previous experiences, I already knew that Adobe’s Liquid Layout features DO NOT WORK. I thought I was doomed until I searched in desperation for an alternative. When I found a comment on a message board about QuickResize, I thought “There is no way…this is NOT GOING TO WORK.” Nevertheless, I downloaded the trial on a lark and thought I would give it try, all the while fully expecting that it destroy my document. After I tried it, I was amazed! I applied it to an incredibly difficult document – over 400 pages – with hundreds of margin placed comments, tables, and hundreds of images – and it worked without a single problem. The result was perfect. Wow!

I just want to thank you for saving my sanity and countless hours of my time.”

  • QuickResize is one of the most useful InDesign scripts I’ve ever used. If you need to convert a tablet size document (like a magazine) for a smart phone, this is as simple as it gets, with perfect results in one click. This script will save you hours of time trying to achieve the same thing manually. A bargain at any price.”

  • “I wanted to provide you initial feedback about QuickResize Pro as soon as I could because were I in your shoes, I would be looking forware to hearing it. Today, I used it for to resize 4 to 6 singles pages, to get a feel for what to expect on a smaller, more familiar scale. Since I had worked so long to get to this point with my book, it required considerable courage and faith to shift to book mode and resize the entire book. Today, around 4:00 PM, I ran your script covering my book containing 101 files total and it worked perfectly, every file converted as I needed!

Thanks so much! It saved me hours.”

Description

QuickResize Pro presents a simple window where you can input the new size you’d like the current InDesign document to be.

The new size can be specified in any units, or as a percentage of the current size. The new size doesn’t even have to maintain the old document proportions – so you can make a new document that is 50% narrower than the current one, if you like.

QuickResize Pro is super-easy to use. It does not use InDesign’s complicated, unpredictable, and often useless, “liquid layout” or “alternative layout” features. It simply resizes the current document to whatever size you choose.

QuickResize Pro does not work by creating a PDF of your document and then placing that into a new document. It works by perfectly resizing every element in your document to the new dimensions, meaning that all text and graphics remain fully editable after the resize.

Here’s a screenshot of the script window:

Other Options

“Allow Text to Resize” – Although the document size is changing, that does not mean you necessarily want the text to resize as well. (Consider that if the new size is not the same proportion as the old size, text will be stretched out of proportion – which is rarely desirable.)

“Allow Page Margins to Resize” – Normally, if the document is being resized, the margins should be resized proportionally as well. But if this is not desirable (for instance, if the document is being reduced and a minimum margin size must be maintained) margin-resize can be disabled.

“Snap Text Frames to Margins and Column Guides” – This option is only available if margins are not allowed to resize proportionally with the rest of the document. Since the margins will be different, you may wish to ensure that text frames that previously sat on margins or on column guides continue to do so, even though this means that their rectangular proportion will be changed.

“Redefine Scaling as 100% for All Text Frames” – When shift+dragging the corner of a text frame in InDesign (which is essentially what QuickResize Pro does), the percentage of the frame changes. This option will reset that percentage back to 100% (more convenient, perhaps, but it can cause text to reflow; plus, you’ll no longer have any way of knowing what the old size of the frame was).

Example

In the following example, the layout is being non-proportionally scaled from a width of 160mm to 210mm.
